Word Live Commisions 4b - September Animation

Here's another project I did for Word Live.  It was my first animation attempt.  I created it the old school way...frame by frame and set up the timing and sound effects with a video editor.  It was a lot more work than I would have thought, but I'm pretty satisfied with the end result.

Word Live Commissions 4 - September 2011

[Note: While I don't usually mind if someone displays the work on my blogs on their own websites (with my permission), I ask that you do not repost these commissioned pieces elsewhere. These were financed by a third party and it wouldn't exactly be fair to display them on other websites than was intended. Thanks for your respect and cooperation.]

Here is the next installment of commissioned work for Word Live with the usual commentary on my creative process.

Walk Humbly appeared on the Word Live site on September 3.  The creative brief outlined "a desktop wallpaper based on Micah 6:8."

"He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." (NIV)
I was going for a textured, hand illustrated style with this one.  You can download the wallpaper by clicking on the date above.

Equals appeared on the Word Live site on September 24. The creative brief outlined a poster based on Galatians 3:27
"For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. (28) There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus."
The idea was to convey the terms of equality in the passage:

  • Jew = Gentile
  • Slave = son
  • Son = heir

I used a layout that I experimented with on my very first Word Live project (which didn't work out at the time).  I worked in the pertinent words and added the three equations as a pattern on the "children of God" text. I tried to convey the idea of equality being associated with being "baptized into Christ."

Stay tuned for more soon.  I've got a few projects on the burner, but haven't been able to get past the "simmer" stage on them.  Will post as soon as I'm happy with the result...and stay tuned for more Word Live next month!

Sneak Peek #3: Typographical

I've lagged behind in keeping my blog updated lately. My current round of WordLive commissions have been the most challenging yet. I have a week left to finalize the trio of projects that I'm working on, but in the meantime, here is a peek at a type treatment that I'm incorporating into one of the commissions. I've been drawn toward ornate typographical posters for awhile, but have yet to attempt it for myself. In this one, I used different variations of Bodoni. I'll post the full project in December once it's posted on the Word Live site.

Some context for clarity: the text is from Acts 24 dealing with the false charges brought against Shaul (Paul) by some people who didn't like him (for whatever reason), but didn't know him well enough to realize they had no substance. I used a sampling of some of their complaint on the left side, and posted most of Shaul's response on the right side.
